Roland E. Ford, 89, of Newberry, passed into the Lord's hunting and lovely campground Wednesday May 25, 2011 following a valiant fight for many years with cancer.
Born September 8, 1921 in Edmore, son of the late Glenn & Ethel (Steele) Ford, Roland was a 1941 graduate of McMillan High School. Like most men during this time, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served overseas in the European Theater. He was a member of the 45th division and received various decorations while serving his country until his honorable discharge on November 9, 1944.
Upon returning to the Upper Peninsula, Roland married the former Marcella Groh on November 18, 1944 in Newberry. He was employed at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center for 39 years, retiring as unit supervisor in 1980.
He had many hobbies but loved most their hunting camp and camping at various campgrounds, with Woodland Park in Grand Marias as his favorite. He was a member of the American Legion Post #74, the V.F.W. Post #4418 and the B.P.O.E. #1705 all of Newberry, an active supporter of the Crisp Point Light House and was known for his ability to make people laugh and smile.
Roland is preceded to heaven by his parents, sister Donna Vollick and brother Clayton Ford.
Survivors include his loving wife Marcella of Newberry; children Cherri (Edgar) Torkko of Wayland and Ronald (Carolyn) Ford of McMillan; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister Bernadine Morton of Interlochen.
Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Sunday May 29, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday May 30, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the funeral home with Steve and Cheri Ford presiding. Interment with military honors will take place Tuesday May 31, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
