Margaret Modroo, 82, of Newberry, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2012 surrounded by her loving and devoted husband, her children and grandchildren. Those that weren’t in her hospital room were present via cell phone conference call on speaker-phone where stories were told by all in celebration of her life.
Born August 30, 1929 in Traverse City, MI, daughter of the late Albert and Belle (Weathers) Conant, Margaret is preceded in death by four brothers, one sister and grandchildren Mamie Hardy and Jerome Modroo.
Margaret attended Yuba School through the 8th grade and graduated from Traverse City High School. On December 9, 1950, she married Robert J. Modroo in Williamsburg, MI. Shortly after their marriage they moved to a Fire Tower cabin in remote, northern Alger County where she raised twin boys (Allen & Elton) until they were four. In 1955 they moved to Newberry, MI and in 1956 their daughter, Mary, was born, the first girl in the Modroo family in 60 years. During Margaret’s 59 years in Newberry, she was a member of the Newberry United Methodist Church, helping at many of the church functions. She was a special woman, wife and mother of her time, spending countless hours in the kitchen preparing pies, cookies, and other scrumptious treats for family and friends. Margaret loved being outside to enjoy the natural beauty around her.
